Bottom line的意思是底線，表示最低的限度，與中文“底線”的意義多有重合，然而bottom line是否等同于“底線”呢？“底線”一詞經(jīng)常用于日常生活中，比如，"接收和醫(yī)治SARS病人的底線是6000人。" "堅(jiān)持一個(gè)中國(guó)原則是我們的底線。"……“底線”一般表示基本標(biāo)準(zhǔn)或準(zhǔn)則，極限能力或條件，基本立場(chǎng)和原則。

bottom line原是指英語(yǔ)財(cái)務(wù)報(bào)表的最底行的盈虧數(shù)目，后來(lái)延伸引用為表示"最起碼的條件" "可接受的最低價(jià)格”,因此通常情況下可以把“底線”翻譯為bottom line.但是有幾種情況不能把中文中的“底線”譯為bottom line。 比如標(biāo)示某些球類(lèi)運(yùn)動(dòng)場(chǎng)地兩端相對(duì)與"邊線"的"底線",一般籃球和足球的“底線”是back line/end line;足球是goal line；羽毛球和網(wǎng)球是base line.
